What is a good dividend yield for a stock?

A dividend yield of 3–5% is generally considered solid for income investors. Yields above 7–8% are often a warning sign — they typically reflect a falling stock price rather than a generous payout, and frequently precede a dividend cut. The quality of the underlying business matters as much as the yield itself: a 4% yield from a profitable company with a low P/E and strong Piotroski F-Score is a materially different investment from a 4% yield from a loss-making company paying dividends from reserves.

What is a dividend yield trap?

A dividend yield trap occurs when a stock appears to offer an attractive yield but the yield is high because the share price has fallen sharply — often because the market expects the dividend to be cut or the business is in financial difficulty. To avoid yield traps, check that the company has a positive P/E ratio (meaning it is profitable), a manageable debt level, and a Piotroski F-Score above 3.

How to use this dividend screener

The table above shows every US common stock in our database yielding 3% or more, sorted highest yield first. Three columns are worth checking before acting on any name.

Value Score is StockPik's composite rating, which weighs P/E, P/B, ROE, debt levels, and financial strength. A high yield with a low score often means the market is pricing in risk — either a likely dividend cut or a business in trouble. A high yield with a high score is more interesting.

P/E ratio tells you whether the company is profitable enough to sustain the payout. A stock with no P/E (shown as —) is typically loss-making, which means the dividend is being paid from reserves. That is not sustainable. A P/E under 15 with a yield above 3% is a combination Graham specifically advocated for defensive investors.

Piotroski F-Score is a nine-point financial health check based on profitability, leverage, and efficiency trends. A score of 7 or above means the business is improving across most of those dimensions. A score of 3 or below is a red flag.
