Energy is probably the sector where blindly applying a P/E ratio will lead you most astray. At the peak of a commodity cycle, earnings are high and P/E looks low — but that's often exactly the wrong time to buy. At the trough, earnings collapse and P/E looks astronomical or undefined, which can actually be when the opportunity is better. For energy stocks, P/B ratio and the Piotroski F-Score hold up better across the cycle. A company trading near book value with an improving F-Score in a down part of the cycle is a more reliable value signal than a low P/E at the top. The Graham Number works for profitable energy companies but should be used with cycle-awareness.
