Consumer defensive companies — food producers, household goods, tobacco, supermarkets — are the closest thing to a steady-state investment in the stock market. Revenues don't collapse in recessions because people still buy groceries and toothpaste. That stability commands a premium, so you rarely find consumer defensives at rock-bottom P/E multiples. What you do find, periodically, are high-quality businesses with durable dividend histories trading at temporarily depressed prices due to commodity cost spikes, currency headwinds, or short-term earnings misses. Benjamin Graham had a particular fondness for this sector — many of his worked examples involve exactly this type of company.
